Remembering I love to dance, Nicole the Canadian invited me to join her and her friends at Funky Lab on Thursday night. Exciting! Somewhere besides El Cubano?!! I’d heard good things about the DJs at Funky Lab. Unfortunately, though, no one else was as excited. My co-workers, Brooke, Javier, and Adam were all tired and I didn’t want to go by myself. Not taking no for an answer, Nicole told me she’d have her friend Shawn pick me up and drop me off. How could I say no to that?
I was a little surprised when an enormous white and red van pulled up in front of Puccini. Conveniently, Shawn works part-time for a safari company, so our group could all fit in his van. We were joined by five British girls, one British boy, and one Irish boy – all students enrolled in a sports management / physical education program in Liverpool. They have a house in Windhoek for the summer and internships in the city. It was a little overwhelming – as soon as they got in the van, the singing began. Maybe they spend a lot of time on buses in their program, I’m not sure, but these guys had a whole repertoire of songs (with very dirty lyrics, I might add) and kept the car ride very entertaining.
It was a little awkward pulling up to a night club in Windhoek in a huge safari van filled with a group of noisy British (white) people. The scene was good once we got inside, lots of dancing and, as promised, an excellent DJ. They were a rowdy but fun bunch. I was surprised to learn the girls also loved Jack Daniels and one had recently won VIP tickets to the Euro-MTV awards in Liverpool, which sounded like the coolest thing ever. I also learned the British word for chug is “see it down.”
Thank goodness today is Friday.
